How to Incorporate Cultural Symbols into Your Patio Design

Image1

We’ve seen plenty of beautiful patio designs in our time, but some of the most impressive are the ones that manage to incorporate artwork into the outdoor space.

Specifically, cultural symbols that add depth, meaning, and communicate the unique personalities of the owners. Whether they’re of the Jewish faith, Islam, Christianity, or Buddhism, there are so many symbols that represent everything from love, strength, resilience, family, and each of them can enrich a home’s aesthetic and create a welcoming atmosphere.

Incorporating them effectively is not so easy, however. For the patios we’ve come across, many incorporate symbols in such a way that they fit in harmoniously with the overall design, working to complement the existing elements of the patio rather than detract from them. Below are a few ideas of what we mean.

Outside Wall Art

Just recently, we came across a gorgeous patio that had incorporated the Star of David wall art, utilising materials that were designed to last, and placed underneath a beautifully crafted pergola for protection. It’s not often that you come across a garden with outdoor art, so when you do, it creates an interesting discussion point!

Culturally Significant Lighting

Another way homeowners incorporate cultural symbols in their patio is through the lighting. We’ve seen a number of gardens now utilising lanterns or string lights that are inspired by a specific culture, such as Chinese lanterns or Moroccan lamps. For those with an outdoor dining space, it’s also possible to use candles or candle holders that incorporate cultural symbols, enhancing the atmosphere while also providing some soft, warm lighting for the dining experience.

Soft Furnishings and Textiles

Speaking of a pergola, this space could also provide an opportunity to incorporate some culturally-inspired additions, including cushions, throws, or outdoor rugs that feature patterns or colours reflective of your culture. Depending on the kind of pergola you have, you could also hang fabric banners or flags that add a more festive feel, with vibrant colours that draw the eye and, once again, provide an interesting focal point.

Decorative Accents

Sculptures or statues that represent cultural figures, deities, or symbols can also be perfect for what you’re trying to achieve.

If you have no space for statues, wind chimes or bells – which incorporate symbols or sounds – can also work to create a serene atmosphere, without taking up too much space!

A Themed Garden Space

Lastly, when we talk about ‘cultural symbols’, we don’t just mean specific symbols like the cross, or the hand of hamsa. Many patios we’ve come across are surrounded by themed gardens, with plants that hold cultural significance, such as olive trees and lavender, or bonsai trees and koi ponds. Sometimes, subtle cultural symbolism like this can be just as effective, while also excellent for enhancing the overall atmosphere you have created.

Conclusion

If you’re part of a religious household – or live by the values that cultural symbols represent – including them in your outdoor space can be a great way to continue the theme you’ve created with your interior design.

All you have to do is take a good look at what you’re working with, and find a way to include them subtly and effectively, so as not to overwhelm the space or detract from its overall aesthetic.
