Planning a West Coast Garden: Hardscape, Planting and Drainage in the Right Order

Planning a garden on Vancouver Island or the Gulf Coast of BC involves a different set of considerations than planning in most other parts of Canada. The climate is mild enough to grow a remarkable range of plants, the rainfall is abundant and the growing season is long. But the same mild, wet climate that makes this an exceptional gardening environment also creates specific demands around drainage, soil management and the relationship between hard structures and planted areas that, if ignored in the planning phase, produce problems that are difficult and expensive to fix after the fact.

Getting the sequence right, addressing hardscape first, drainage next and planting last, is the single most important principle of West Coast garden planning. The reasons are practical rather than aesthetic.

Why hardscape comes first

Hardscape, the term for all the fixed structural elements of a garden including patios, paths, retaining walls, driveways, steps and garden borders, determines how the rest of the space functions. The levels, grades and surface drainage of the hardscape establish where water flows and collects, where foot traffic moves, and what the character of the space will be before a single plant goes in the ground.

Installing hardscape after planting is the most common mistake in residential garden construction. Mature plants that are in the way of a path need to be removed or worked around. Established garden beds that are disrupted by retaining wall construction suffer for years in recovery. The concrete and compaction work that patio installation requires is incompatible with nearby root systems.

Planning hardscape first also allows the designer and client to understand the full spatial logic of the garden before committing to plants. The proportion of paved to planted area, the flow between outdoor rooms, the placement of seating and gathering spaces: all of these are hardscape decisions that determine what the garden needs to accommodate rather than the other way around.

Drainage: the factor most often underestimated on the West Coast

The rainfall that Victoria and the surrounding region receives between October and March is substantial and sustained. A garden that drains adequately in summer can be saturated and standing for weeks in winter if the drainage has not been addressed as part of the design.

The soil conditions on much of Vancouver Island compound this. Clay soils, which are common across the Victoria area, have poor natural drainage. Water that cannot percolate through the root zone pools at the surface or, more problematically, stands in the root zone where it excludes oxygen and creates conditions hostile to most ornamental plants. French drains, gravel-filled trenches with perforated pipe, redirect water away from planted areas. Raised beds built above the clay layer allow plant root zones to exist in well-drained growing medium even where the native soil is not adequate.

Drainage should be planned alongside the hardscape, not after it. The relationship between surface grading, paved area drainage and planted area drainage is interconnected, and addressing it as an integrated system produces a garden that works well through the West Coast’s extended wet season.

Planting for the West Coast climate

The West Coast climate rewards a different plant palette than what works elsewhere in Canada. The mild winters allow tender perennials to thrive as near-permanent plantings. The prolonged dry summer period, which runs from approximately June through September with minimal rainfall, creates drought stress in many plants that appear perfectly suited to the cool, wet winter climate.

The most resilient West Coast gardens use drought-tolerant plants in the areas that will not receive supplemental irrigation and reserve more moisture-dependent plantings for irrigated zones. Mediterranean climate plants, many of which are hardy to zone 8 or below, are well suited to the dry summer and mild winter combination. Native plants adapted to seasonal drought, including many camas species, arbutus relatives and coastal ferns, build low-maintenance structure that supports pollinators without demanding supplemental water.

Planning the irrigation system at the design stage, in coordination with the hardscape and drainage systems, avoids the later cost and disruption of retrofitting irrigation into an established garden. An irrigation designer who understands the plant palette and the microclimate of the specific site can size zones and emitter rates appropriately for what is planted in each area.

The sequence in practice

For a complete garden project, the sequence from start to finish is: site assessment and design, then hardscape construction including any grading, retaining wall and paving work, then underground drainage installation, then irrigation system installation, then soil amendment and bed preparation, then planting. Each phase creates the conditions for the next to succeed. Reversing or skipping steps in this sequence is where West Coast garden projects most commonly create expensive problems that could have been prevented by following the logic of the order.
